What is a Successful Entrepreneur?
The definition of a successful entrepreneur varies depending on the perspective of who you speak to. A successful entrepreneur, according to certain individuals would be the person who takes opportunities to create businesses, create jobs and wealth. To other individuals, a successful entrepreneur is calculated risk-taker who is constantly weighing up the options available and whether the potential outcome could be worth the initial risk. For some people a successful entrepreneur is creative innovator who is always either coming up with new ideas or improving on existing products/services. However, since there are different types of entrepreneurs, being a successful entrepreneur will depend on their ultimate goals.
The Common Characteristics of a Successful Entrepreneur
In general, a successful entrepreneur will be an extrovert, a risk-taker and a creative innovator who increases efficiency, productivity, or generates new products or services. Not all successful entrepreneurs imagine new solutions which generate opportunities for profit or reward as it depends on the type of entrepreneur. The main types of entrepreneur are:
- Social Entrepreneur: A successful entrepreneur in this case would be one who has helped, improved and transformed social, environmental, educational and economic conditions.
- Serial Entrepreneur: A serial entrepreneur would be classed as a successful entrepreneur when their portfolio of new ideas is realized and are commercially viable.
- Lifestyle Entrepreneur: A successful lifestyle entrepreneur would be one who has developed a long-term, sustainable and viable business operating in a field where they have a particular interest, passion, talent, knowledge or high degree of expertise.
Goals of a Successful Entrepreneur
When a successful entrepreneur realizes their entrepreneurial vision, they act as a catalyst for economic change and emerge from the population on demand. They become leaders because they perceive opportunities available and are well-positioned to take advantage of them. It is a common trait that they have an passion for their entrepreneurial venture which is why a successful entrepreneur would not perceive working on their venture as work since they love what they do.
Stereotyping Successful Entrepreneurs
The fact that a successful entrepreneur could be either male or female does not seem to matter as most entrepreneurial behavior is dependent on the business they are in, their own personal circumstances, social and economic factors. For example, countries which have healthy and diversified labor markets or stronger safety nets show a more favorable ratio of opportunity-driven rather than necessity-driven female entrepreneurs. Empirical studies suggest that female entrepreneurs possess strong negotiating skills and consensus-forming abilities.
So it seems although there are common influences, personality traits and characteristics, there is no single proven template, formula or process to follow in order to become a successful entrepreneur. Even at that, the way a successful entrepreneur is defined or perceived differs, depending on who you speak with.
